Vehicle Build Sheet (VBS)
Vehicle Build Sheet (VBS) - The build sheet is the “birth certificate” of the 8 Series. It reports the technical specifications, colors, and options of a particular vehicle. Dealer add-on accessories are excluded from the factory build sheets.
Vehicle Build Sheets are available upon request to registered and approved 8Coupe.com users in almost ten languages. They can also be requested through the BMW customer support and from most BMW dealerships.
The report comprises of four sections:
1. Vehicle information – This is the top section of the report. It lists the following:
Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
Type code
Type
Type (e.g. model and leading market version, such as: 850CI (EUR))
Dev. Series (for the 8er, it would be E31)
Line (always “8”)
Body Type (always “coupe”)
Steering (e.g. LL = left hand drive, RL = right hand drive)
Door Count (always “2”)
Engine
Cubical capacity
Power (horsepower)
Transmission
Gearbox
Colour
Upholstery
Prod. Date
2. Order options – The second section lists equipment added to the vehicle over and above the standard offering. It lists the option code and description.
3. Series options – The third section lists equipment for a specific model variation of the 8 Series depending on specific vehicle (e.g. 850CSi) or market requirements (e.g. USA). The term "options" may be mis-applied as Series Options usually means Standard Equipment for a specific model and/or market. This section is mostly aged off from the BMW IT systems after 10 years.
4. Individual data – The last section of this report are items that were either processed by BMW Individual or an expanded explanation of option codes 490 (Special Exterior Paint), 9990/Z1XX (special order upholstery), or 940 (Special Request Equipment).

This is an example report from a M73 850CiA, German market version. The VBS is presented in two languages: Deutsch and English.
Vehicle Build Sheets - Online Sources
Spring 2012
Standard issue build sheets are now available online through various sources such as the BMW Classic Parts Catalogue and another non-official site BMWVIN.com.
Just enter the last 7 digits of your car´s VIN, e.g. CB72001 to obtain the very same build sheet that a BMW dealership would extract through their internal channels.
Those build sheets are unedited and may contain wrong descriptions for order options which were aged off past the production period of the 8-series and later on replaced by different ones.
In contrast to the exclusive to 8Coupe.com VBS-reports those factory build sheets do not contain any statistical evaluations.
Vehicle Build Sheet Report (VBS-R) -
this report is provided exclusively by the BMW 8 Series Registry and contains statistical evaluations based on the aggregated 30,621 factory build sheets.
The base data sheet today contains in excess of 4.8 million data points correlating every conceivable aspect of the BMW 8-series coupé production. The VBS-Report vastly extends the current information culled from the Inventory Project and provides additional insights for a particular 8er, such as:
- Number of vehicles in a particular color, upholstery, and color combination also correlated with sequential build per total production, calendar year and model year
- Number of vehicles with particular options.
- Sequential chassis number, type code and engine type information.
- Thumbnails of all archived picture material
This information is presented alongside reference pictures for the exterior color, upholstery, market version, type code and engine type.
The VBS-R report is created by an offline tool and can be extended according to owner input in the future. Let us know what improvements you could imagine - send feedback to the Registry Volunteer Team!

The VBS-Report is finally ready!
The 8Coupe.com team is proud to present car specific and absolutely unique background information that hitherto has not been available and will only ever be available through 8Coupe.com.
Hundreds and hundreds of hours of data sorting, table generation and calculation along with months of programming efforts have led to the Vehicle Build Sheet Report (VBS-R) as depicted and detailed in the box to the right.
Each VBS-Report consists of 10 or more pages filled with statistical figures, highlighting almost 100 data points of your car within the production cycle of the BMW 8-series coupé.
This report makes full use of the aggregated 30,621 build data sheets, inventoried between 2004 and Fall 2006. Some of the information contained therein has now been aged off from the BMW IT systems and is no longer available through the manufacturer itself.
Additionally archived image information is included at the end of the report. For some cars the archive holds data back until the late 90´s!
Every 8er owner (You!) who has successfully registered with 8Coupe.com and hence added to the growth of the archive can request a VBS-Report for their own 8-series coupé. If you would like to add current pictures of your car to the VBS-R please send them by email to the Registry Membership Team at 8Coupe.com.
VBS-Reports will always be generated manually and hence are not available for direct download. The reports will be sent out as PDF files by email. Please make sure that the request box below has the correct email address and includes the last 7 digits of your car´s VIN in the email body. Depending on the amount of images archived the VBS-Report will be between 0.5 and 2.0 MByte in size.
VBS-Reports are available in English, German, French, Swedish, Norwegian, Dutch, Spanish and Italian languages. Please specify your preferred language upon request.
VBS reports will only be issued to registered and approved owners.
